For the past 16 years, Azhar Abdul-Salam has been the course manager and senior lecturer for the Diploma in Mass Media Management in Nanyang Polytechnic.
Before becoming an educator, Azhar worked as a producer for companies such as Mediacorp and ESPN STAR Sports, working on the ground to report on stories.
Besides teaching, Azhar manages all aspects of the diploma programme such as student industry projects. His job is to ensure the curriculum is rigorous enough to prepare students for the workforce as well as provide opportunities for students to gain a competitive edge.
His endless guidance and dedication towards his students have not gone unnoticed. In 2012, as part of the Koh Boon Hwee Scholars Award, a former student of Azhar honoured him as an inspiring role model.
For Azhar, the favourite part of his job would be the annual graduation ceremony.
“To see my students develop into the individuals that they become is satisfying and very fulfilling for me. Many still keep in touch years after their graduation, and that is enough to make me happy,” he said.
